Myspace or Yours

Hey You,

Its been a long time since I've blogged.

I have been saving my issues and forwarding of articles and links that get my ire up or that I think are special for emails I have been sending to my friends. I don't get a lot of comments on the blog site for whatever reason.

Is it because no one knows I am here.

Comment please. That is the point of this.

What, do I have to move to Myspace too?...

I am so not a follower....

Hey, I am just a squirrel, trying to get a nut.

Talk to you soon...

IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN YOUR TALENT NO ONE ELSE WILL EITHER...

A week or so ago, I attended a Learning Annex workshop on Writing The Great American Screenplay taught by the legendary, Lew Hunter. He is the author of the instructional tome, Lew Hunter, Screenwriting 434, which is one of the bibles of screenwriting.

He was casual, irreverent, funny and humble about his 30 years of experience in television, television movies and feature films. In addition to quoting the late, great mythologist Joseph Campbell's The Hero With A Thousand Faces and The Hero's Journey, he referenced Aristole's Poetics (you may have this book lying around from college philosophy - especially, if you as I, attended a Jesuit university) and Lajos Egri (Who? I had the same question - See below.)

What endeared him to me further was that he said he was not impressed with the pyrotechnics that resulted when writers string together a bunch of expletives ... he did not reference as "great" (a term thrown around way too casually these days anyway) any of the filmmakers and/or screenwriters famous for passing this stuff off as dialogue.

It was very interesting that he cited as one of his favorite current movies The Girl With The Pearl Earring. I guess I have to see it now.

I would love love love to attend his Indian Summer Screenwriting Colony in Nebraska...for me it would be akin to being E.T. A Brooklyn girl in Nebraska. (There's a screenplay in there, ya think) We'll see.....

He left me with increased hope and confidence in my abilities. Most importantly, he encouraged the class to FINISH our work!!!!

RECOMMENDED!

In his words "The journey is all the end is nothing."

When I think of Home, I think of a Place ….

Not to be missed is the ESSENCE Showhouse at 153 West 120TH street in Harlem, NYC.
The renovated brownstone, christened “Homecoming” features three apartments, decorated to reflect the tastes, interests and lifestyle of three archetypical ESSENCE magazine readers. Susan L. Taylor said it was “an example of what vision passion and creativity can create.”

Homecoming is the result of a partnership between Essence Magazine and Abyssinian Development Corporation (as owner/developer). The Brownstone is part of the Neighborhood Homes Project established by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

The design team included Vanessa Bush, Courtney Sloane, Keita Turner, Everick Brown, and Zevilla Jackson Preston.

Michelle Ebanks, ESSENCE president, Dr. Rev. Calvin Butts and team cut ribbon officially opening Homecoming.

Here is the ESSENCE webpage http://www.essence.com/essence/homecoming/ that illustrates Homecoming’s journey from eyesore to jewel of the neighborhood. Also available are information on the designers, contractors and sponsors who made it possible.

The objective of Homecoming is to encourage homeownership, the real wealth builder in America. According to an Essence survey, purchasing a first home, is a goal of most of Essence magazines’ 7 million readers. “Our readers are clear that homeownership can change the circumstances of your life” reported Angela Burt Murray, Editor-In-Chief.

The house will be open through November 2005 for tours and will also offer free classes on renovation topics, decorating and entertaining. When the Showhouse ends the building will be sold to an individual through ADC’s home-ownership program. The homeowner can live in the duplex apartment and rent out the two single units.

Here are some of my photographs of the show house.

I'm going to Fashion Week, because I never made it to Mardi Gras

Oscar De La Renta Spring 2006 - 9/12/05

10 talented female graduates of the Academy of Art University (San Francisco) debuted their designs to the NY Fashion crowd. 9/11/05

I decided to cover Spring 2006 Fashion Week this year. Trust me, it took courage. For the past five years, I would scurry pass Bryant Park lest some fashionnista out me as a fashion mess or a fatty. This year with all the deceit, cruelty and mayhem in the world I decided to seek out Fashion Week. To embrace a world where the words beauty and order are used as mantras. Of course, there is drama at Fashion Week. Sure there's egoism, greed, envy, but its light stuff in the scheme of things. Sure, there are long lines to get into shows, where I had to stand, but I was happy to be in the house. I was grateful to photograph the beautiful clothes, the smiling beautiful people, to see the artistry of the designers and their teams, to be a part of the one time spectacle that is the Spring Fashion 2006 show. I thought of those folks standing on lines in other parts of the country to get food, housing, (used) clothing. And I thought about that saying, there but for the Grace of God, Go I. And I realized that it should not be said smugly, but with acknowledgement, that one day it really could be me. So while beauty is available to be appreciated, I plan to appreciate it. I always thought I'd have time to go to New Orleans and see Mardi Gras. So whatever it is you plan to do - go for it. Because tomorrow is not promised. Even though I have it from a good source, Spring 2006 is going to be beautiful.
P.S. I wish wars could be fought by a walk-off on the catwalks (like in the movie Zoolander)!

These two handsome gentlemen caught my eye at the Academy of Art University Show - 9/11/05

RESPONSE TO BKLYN GIRL - SLAVERY AND REDEMPTION IN SUDAN

roundthewaygirl said...
Hey Girl Blue,I am from Brooklyn also, and love cosmos, too. Are you my cousin?I was so happy to see your blog and to see you cover events such important films and documentaries.I saw Moon over Sudan as well, I thought it was a great documentary, yes it had technical difficulties, but overall it was powerful. As you detailed in your post this documentary uncovers that there is more to the crisis in Sudan than the slavery issue. At one point Rev. Sharpton and Eddie Harris Jr. said they were interested in doing outreach with the film to get the documentary to the community. I thought that was a great idea. He also said that Black Americans with tremendous resources are doing nothing to help out many of the unfortunate voiceless people in the world. I decided to put wishing and hoping someone else would do something on hold. I am currently organizing a fundraiser for famine relief in Darfur. It could be in Brooklyn or Manhattan - venue is still not confirmed. It will be cocktails and finger foods with profits going toward the cause. If you have any interest in helping out or attending, please let me know.In the meantime, I want to mention two things you can do to help suffering people right now.Go to the www.hungersite.com and click on the link to provide free food for people in need. You can also buy fair trade items. Right now at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea, NYC (123 w. 18th Street) is a free photographic exhibition by a young man who spent a year on a Mercy Ship. The exhibition will be up until September 8. Mercy Ships travel the world providing free surgery to poor people. Go to the website for information www.onamercyship.com.Thank you and Bless Your Heart (as my mamma used to say) for caring.
